An island day is a different kind of Istanbul outing

The Princes’ Islands are in the Sea of Marmara. Visiting them is a day-trip decision, not an interchangeable version of a short Bosphorus crossing. Your time commitment includes travel to the mainland pier, the outward sailing, island walking and the return connection. Begin with what you want from the day: an unhurried lunch and waterfront walk, a longer exploration or a visit to a particular place. Then choose one island that fits. Attempting several islands on a first visit can leave more time spent checking departures and waiting at gates than actually enjoying the places you travelled to see.

Choose the island before choosing the boat

The commonly visited islands on Şehir Hatları’s Kabataş–Adalar route include Kınalıada, Burgazada, Heybeliada and Büyükada, with different calls shown for individual sailings. Büyükada is a natural option when it is already the place you want to explore; it should not be chosen only because you assume every boat ends there. If you have a specific attraction in mind, verify that it is on the island you are selecting and check its visitor arrangements separately. A ferry ticket is transport, not admission. For a first outing, our recommendation is a single-island plan with a meal and one main walk rather than an ambitious multi-island itinerary.

Choosing a mainland departure pier

Compare the full journey from your accommodation. Kabataş can be useful from the European side, while Bostancı is another major starting point to investigate in the island-route directory. Do not compare sailing time alone: a faster boat from a distant pier may save little after the extra land journey. Check the operator, exact boarding terminal and route together. If you are near Sultanahmet, T1 towards Kabataş is a transport option to investigate; from Taksim, F1 connects to Kabataş. At the waterfront, find the Adalar service specifically. A boat from the same district to Kadıköy is not automatically the island sailing you need.

How to read the island timetable

Island tables can be wide, showing several mainland and island columns. Start with the correct day category and departure direction. Follow one sailing row from your boarding pier to your chosen island; do not combine times from different rows. A dash means that the row does not give a call there. The reviewed Kabataş–Adalar timetable shows that some sailings skip particular intermediate stops, so the route title alone is insufficient. Save the return table separately and identify the column for the island where you will actually be. If you change islands during the day, you must recalculate the return rather than reuse your original plan.

A dated sailing example—and what it means for your day

The Şehir Hatları table reviewed on 24 October 2026 lists a weekday/Saturday example leaving Kabataş at 09:00 and reaching Büyükada at 10:45: 1 hour 45 minutes on that multi-stop sailing. In the return table, Büyükada 16:30 reaches Kabataş 18:20, or 1 hour 50 minutes. Together these examples leave 5 hours 45 minutes ashore and 9 hours 20 minutes between the two Kabataş departures/arrivals, before the journey from and back to your hotel. That arithmetic explains why a relaxed island visit is a full-day plan. These are examples from the reviewed timetable, not reserved services or a guarantee for your date; select the correct day and recheck the operating notice.

Build the return before you plan lunch

Choose a preferred return and at least one earlier or later usable alternative before leaving the mainland. Check where the boat finishes and how you will reach your hotel from that pier. A return to a different part of Istanbul may be workable, but it can add a substantial final journey. Do not automatically plan around the last advertised sailing. Leave time for an unhurried walk back and a queue at the correct terminal. Save the relevant timetable so you can consult it easily, then check live notices again during the day: a saved schedule does not override a service cancellation.

Büyükada on foot: choose Dilburnu or Aya Yorgi

Begin at the historic ferry pier and the adjoining centre, then have a meal or a short orientation walk before committing to the island’s hillier interior. For a longer outing, choose either a route towards Dilburnu or an Aya Yorgi-focused walk. Adalar Municipality identifies Dilburnu as part of the island’s traditional excursion circuit, while the national Culture Portal places Aya Yorgi Monastery on Büyükada’s highest hill, Yücetepe. These are two different goals, not quick stops to add automatically to a waterfront stroll. Save your chosen destination on a map, check its approach and current access, and calculate the walk back as well as the walk out.

Aya Yorgi, Hamidiye Mosque and a shorter alternative

Aya Yorgi suits travellers who actively want an uphill excursion and a religious landmark; it should not be presented as an effortless extension for every family or traveller. The summit location means ascent is part of the visit, so take water and allow a generous turnaround margin. For a shorter cultural stop, the municipality identifies Hamidiye Mosque on Hamidiye Camii Sokağı, built under Abdülhamid II and notable for Western architectural influences. Combine that area with the centre and a waterfront meal instead of attempting the summit. Follow worship and visitor instructions at religious sites. IETT lists island transport routes, but verify their current stops before assuming a vehicle reaches the entrance of your chosen attraction.

Food, bags and weather preparation

Bring comfortable footwear, a removable layer and enough phone charge to check return information. Keep luggage small enough to manage through gates and on a walk. Before ordering a long meal, look at both the menu and the time needed to return to the pier. If you want to spend time by the water, check the actual location’s access rules rather than assuming a ferry ticket includes a beach or facility. In unsettled conditions, shorten the day and monitor operating notices. Şehir Hatları notes that weather and technical reasons can disrupt sailings; decide in advance what would make you postpone the excursion.

What this trip includes—and what it does not

An independently planned ferry day normally means you arrange transport, food and island activities separately. It does not include a guide, a guaranteed seat at a restaurant, entrance to private facilities or a hotel transfer unless you purchase a product that explicitly states those inclusions. Compare packaged island tours on that basis rather than price alone. If you prefer independence, the benefit is control over your pace; the responsibility is keeping track of the return. End the day with enough margin to make the journey back comfortably, rather than adding one final stop that turns the last hour into a race.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit all the islands in one day?

You can investigate connections, but we recommend one island for a first visit. Every additional stop requires another timetable and reduces time ashore.

Is an island ferry a Bosphorus cruise?

No. The Princes’ Islands are in the Sea of Marmara. Island transport and Bosphorus sightseeing are different itineraries.

Does every Kabataş sailing stop at every island?

No. Read the individual row in the current timetable; some calls are omitted on particular sailings.

Should I book dinner immediately after returning?

Leave a generous buffer for the sailing and land journey, or keep dinner flexible. Weather and operating changes can affect the return.
